First-Time Outcall Doll Rental Guide: Delivery, Handling & Safe Return

New to renting a realistic doll? A few simple tips will help you enjoy your experience, protect the doll, and avoid unnecessary damage or charges.

If you’re having a Vivant doll delivered to your home or hotel—or picking one up yourself—welcome! Realistic dolls are heavier and more delicate than they look. They don’t move quite like people, and there’s a little learning curve the first time you handle one.

It’s straightforward once you get the hang of it. Here’s how to prepare, handle your rental safely, and help protect your security deposit.

1. Be Prepared for a Heavy Travel Case

Even our smaller dolls can be surprisingly heavy. Depending on the model, the doll and its case together may weigh around 70 pounds or more. Our wheeled travel cases make transportation easier, but you still need to account for stairs, curbs, and getting the case into your home or hotel room.

If the doll is arriving by Uber or another delivery driver, be ready to meet the driver at the agreed pickup point and take possession of the case.

Before delivery, prepare a clean bed with plenty of room. We recommend a freshly washed, light-colored sheet to protect the doll from dirt and dye transfer.

2. Notice How Everything Is Packed

Before removing the doll from its travel case, take a good look at the packing arrangement. Snap a quick photo. It will make returning the doll much easier.

Notice the position of the head, arms, legs, knee pads, blanket, and other protective padding. Pack the doll back the same way for its return.

Check the doll and case promptly. If anything looks damaged or unusual when it arrives, contact us right away. Our Rental Agreement requires notification of pre-existing damage within 30 minutes of receiving the doll.

3. The Easy Way to Lift a Doll: Make an L, Not a Plank

This is the handling trick we wish every first-time renter knew. A doll that is lying flat with its arms and legs straight is awkward to pick up—it behaves like a heavy, floppy plank. Don’t try to hoist it out of the case while it’s lying straight.

  1. Straighten the legs gently. While the doll is securely supported in its open case, bring the legs into a straight, comfortable position if they aren’t already. Never force a joint.
  2. Bend at the hips, one leg at a time. Slowly raise one leg from the hip, then the other, so the legs and torso form roughly an L shape. Move each joint separately and stay within its natural range.
  3. Rock the torso forward. Support the upper back and gently bring the doll forward until it’s sitting on its buttocks. With its legs raised and torso supported, it now forms more of a bent V shape instead of a straight plank.
  4. Lift in a cradle. Slip one arm behind the doll’s back and the other under the backs of its thighs. Keep the doll close to your body and lift smoothly, supporting its weight with both arms.
  5. Lower it onto the prepared bed. Support the back and thighs as you lower it gently, then reposition the legs one joint at a time.

Never lift by the head, neck, hands, fingers, or feet. Watch for hands getting trapped underneath the body, and be careful not to catch your fingers between the doll and the case. If the weight feels difficult to control, ask another person to help rather than risking a drop. Use the same supported approach in reverse when you’re ready to repack it.

4. Take Your Time Learning How the Joints Move

A realistic doll has an articulated internal skeleton, but it won’t move fluidly like a person. The trick is to move one joint at a time: first the shoulder, for example, then the elbow, then the hand.

Don’t twist several joints together or push past resistance. If something feels stuck, stop and ask us.

Hands and fingers are particularly delicate. Before moving the legs or turning the body, check that the hands aren’t resting underneath the doll or caught where a joint will move. Fingers can bend backward or break if trapped.

Protect the face, too. Don’t put pressure on the nose, ears, eyes, or neck. If an eye moves out of position, it can usually be gently adjusted with a clean fingertip; never pry or force it.

For additional positioning tips, see our Doll Handling Tips.

5. Keep the Doll Clean—and Be Especially Careful With Dark Colors

Please keep the doll either on a clean bed or inside its travel case. Never place it on the floor, dirty carpet, an old couch, or a chair that could transfer dirt, oils, or dye.

Dark colors can permanently stain a doll. This is a real problem, not just a theoretical precaution. Dark clothing—especially black garments, denim, leggings, lingerie, or newly purchased outfits—can transfer dye onto the doll’s skin. So can dark bedding, colored towels, black vinyl chairs, leather-like furniture, and other dark or dye-prone surfaces.

If you want to dress the doll in your own clothes, avoid dark or untested fabrics. Choose clean, light-colored items whenever possible, and don’t leave the doll in prolonged contact with clothing or furniture that might stain it. Some discoloration cannot be removed and may result in damage charges.

Other important rental precautions:

  • No standing. Don’t stand the doll upright or let its feet touch the floor.
  • Protect the face. The doll’s mouth is not intended for use during rentals.
  • Watch the fingers. Never let the doll’s body weight rest on its hands, wrists, or fingertips.
  • Don’t force positions. Move slowly and stay within the joints’ normal range.
  • Keep it away from dirt and heat. Avoid dirty surfaces, direct heat, sharp objects, and anything that might damage its soft skin.

6. Cleaning and Included Accessories

We thoroughly clean our rental dolls before and after every rental.

Depending on your model, the accessory bag may contain a sponge, forceps or other cleaning tools, and a warming stick. If you need to clean the doll during your rental, use the supplied accessories with mild soap and water only as directed. Rinse appropriately and dry thoroughly before putting it away.

Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive materials, and cleaning products not approved for the doll. If your accessory bag includes a warming stick, follow its specific instructions. Never leave it operating unattended; unplug and remove it when finished.

If you’re unsure how anything works, text us before trying it. We’re happy to explain.

7. Pack the Doll Carefully for Its Return

When your rental is over, pull up that photo you took during unpacking. Take a few extra minutes to put everything back the way it arrived.

  1. Return the doll to approximately its original position, with the head at the top of the case.
  2. Reattach the protective knee pads and arrange the blanket and other padding as supplied.
  3. Position the hands, fingers, feet, and other delicate parts so they won’t be compressed.
  4. Check the shoulders and buttocks carefully. Neither should get pinched between the case and lid when you close it.
  5. Put all supplied accessories back in the accessory bag.

Never force the travel case closed. If it won’t close easily, stop and gently reposition the doll or ask for help. Coordinate your return or pickup time with us as agreed, and don’t leave the case unattended.
